Abstract

The physical environment of school plays a large and important role in bringing about learning and has a significant impact on the student’s psychology and his social and academic performance. The modern school building is now subject to many scientific standards and standards that take into account the design, construction, site selection and surrounding environment, and the engineering and construction safety of its various school spaces. This study is one of the exploratory studies through which we aim to evaluate the extent of application of global environmental standards in the design and construction of Algerian schools ; through a field study on two primary schools, one public and the other private, that were newly established in the city of Setif. we reached to the following : The physical designs of primary schools in Algeria do not respond in most of their elements to international design standards in general, nor to environmental standards in particular. There are differences between public primary schools and private schools in the extent to which the physical designs conform to international design standards in favor of private schools, but private and public schools share the characteristic of not adopting environmental standards in the design of the school building.
