Abstract

In Algeria, the teacher of FLE in secondary school is considered as the intercultural mediator par excellence. Therefore, our reflection in this contribution revolves around the following issue: how can the teacher play the role of intercultural mediator in the FLE class? To be able to answer our questions, we opted for a semi-structured interview with ten French teachers at the secondary level in the wilaya of Biskra. The objective is to collect all opinions and representations related to the theoretical and methodological approaches adopted by our informants in fulfilling their role as intercultural mediators in the FLE class. The responses obtained through the semi-structured interview demonstrated that they content themselves with the simple inculcation of linguistic and cultural knowledge,  by transmitting cultural knowledge in an objective manner without worrying about the impact that can cause the representations that learners make vis-à-vis foreign culture. They adopt a purely descriptive approach to the target culture, therefore (inter) cultural teacher training is essential
